Bachelor of Music

The Bachelor’s degree is the first professional qualification and opens up a whole range of professional perspectives. This course aims to prepare students for careers as stage/orchestral musicians and/or music teachers, as no distinction is made between artistic and teacher training.
The course focuses on the acquisition of advanced skills in your main subject and in ensemble work as well as teaching skills in music theory and musicology. It also trains general professional skills such as management and project planning, and also prepares would-be teachers to teach at music schools.
The Bachelor’s courses are based around a central artistic core comprising your main subject. The courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Music are listed below further information/in the service menu on the right.

This is a full-time course which usually lasts eight semesters; completion of the course entitles graduates to 240 credits.
The various Bachelor’s courses mainly target young people in Germany and abroad who have already received musical training relevant to their desired course, i.e. in the corresponding main subject.

Master of Music and Master of Arts

The Master’s course is for students wishing to specialise in a certain area. The Master of Music course aims to expand the student’s skills and knowledge of his/her main subject, with proficiency as a soloist being highlighted for students training as singers or instrumentalists. The course also teaches general skills enabling students to direct music schools or festivals or work in ensembles.
The Master of Arts course focuses on the acquisition of an additional qualification in the area of musicology or theatre education.

Depending on your professional perspective, you may choose between the artistic, artistic/educational or scientific courses listed below further information/on the right, all of which lead to the degree of Master of Music or Master of Arts.

These are full-time courses which usually last four semesters; completion of the course entitles graduates to 120 credits.
The Master’s courses are mainly aimed at graduates with good Bachelor’s degrees who studied either at our college or at other colleges in Germany and abroad. All prospective students should have achieved above-average grades on their undergraduate course and have a clear professional focus.

As an advanced training course, the theatre education degree is open to graduates of a wide variety of academic and professional courses connected with theatre studies. Applicants to the Master’s course in musicology must have a relevant professional qualification and prove that they are able to work scientifically.

Music education

This training course is for teachers at all levels. If you want to train as a teacher, you can therefore choose between courses for teachers at primary, secondary modern, intermediate and grammar schools and a course for special needs teachers.
As music always has to be combined with another school subject, students undergoing teacher training in Rostock study at both the music college and at Rostock University. Various combinations of subject are possible. Students first matriculate at Rostock University of Music and Drama.

The course usually lasts 9 or 10 semesters. Six months of this are spent preparing the first state examination. Final qualification: state examination.

Acting

This course gives actors and actresses a thorough theoretical foundation and trains them to practise their profession and art independently in full awareness of their social responsibility, enabling them to meet the requirements imposed by constant changes in professional practice.

The course usually lasts 8 semesters. Final qualification: diploma.

Language competence
Knowledge of German is essential for all courses. As a foreign student applying for a Master's degree course, you will have to take a language test along with the artistic aptitude test.
