Courses

Profiles. Choosing a course

Motivation by participation is the leitmotif

The introduction of a modular system - especially in the courses for instrumental, vocal, and music education studies - offers students the opportunity to focus on individual main areas and to take supplementary courses. Waiting lists for examination deadlines are avoided thanks to partial tests, which can be taken at any time.

Instrumental-vocal main subjects

Selection of mandatory courses for physical relaxation and sensitisation for overcoming psychosomatic problems complement the subject range.
In artistic training, the chamber music is supplemented by the mandatory ensemble playing of contemporary music.
At the opera school, the vocal music students experience a profession-oriented education. Co-operation agreements with the Rostock opera allow performances under professional conditions and provide the ability to be present during director productions.

Instrument-vocal education

The degree can either be based on a basal manner (from 1st to 8th semester) or on a y-Model: Students of a solo subject may decide after their basic studies whether they want to concentrate on the educational or the artistic branch.
The repertory training support is performed separately according to the fields of subject specialists.

Studies for music education at all school levels
Acting, relaxation training and offers from the field of computers and media science complete the subject range.

Drama studies

Co-operation agreements with the Rostock theatre guarantee a profession-oriented training. The supplementary course "Acting" was established for teachers of all school levels who are already working so they can acquire additional artistic and educational qualifications.
The evaluation and analysis of students' feedback at subject conferences ensures a permanent adjustment of courses to the international education level.

Departments

Our three departments

The Department of Music

is the artistic centre of the university, where the following main and solo subjects are taught:

all orchestra instruments
piano and other keyboard instruments
piano and chamber music (advanced studies)
singing (all voice categories)
orchestra conducting
coaching - all categories
composition (including electronic and
PC based music)
music theory

In addition to the diploma studies and the internationally recognized Master's degree studies, the university offers postgraduate courses to highly talented students ending with the concert examination. Furthermore, the best graduates are given additional support during their first professional year.

Co-operation agreements with the North German philharmonic orchestra, the opera house and the theatre in Rostock provide students with on-the-job training.

The Department of Musicology and Music Education

offers courses to study teaching music as a subject for the following school types:

primary and nine-year elementary school
nine-year elemental and secondary school
grammar school
special schools

All courses include the following three main subjects: artistic education, musical science education and didactic-methodological education. It is possible to take part in a course for private music teachers and teachers at music schools for all instrumental and vocal subjects.

University agreements with Manchester (UK), Umeå (Sweden), Leuven (Belgium), Copenhagen (Denmark), and Nyiregyhaza (Hungary) allow students to study abroad for three months or longer. The annual courses "Discoveries in Music" with lecturers and students from five different countries also indicate the importance and the benefits of international co-operation.

The Drama Department

trains young actresses and actors in a four-year course of studies, which satisfies the requirements of a constantly changing professional routine. In more than 30 years of existence, the Rostock drama school has developed an educational profile rooted firmly in the tradition of German and European dramatic art, while also taking international theatrical developments into consideration.

The wide range of subjects is complemented by motion training, dance, acrobatics, fencing, pantomime, the art of oration, diction, physical and vocal training, vocal education, musical and theatrical science, philosophy, literary history, and cultural theory. The high quality of lessons is also reflected on an international level by awards at highly acclaimed theatre meetings. Up to now, this close connection between education and professional practice resulted in theatre or other media engagements for all graduates.
