Doctorates and Habilitations

hmt Rostock is entitled to confer doctorates and habilitations in the subject areas music education, music theory, musicology and theatre in education.

It provides students, who have successfully completed an above-average university degree in an academic or artistic academic course by gaining the First State Examination (erstes Staatsexamen), a Diplom, Magister, or master’s, or an equivalent final examination in the subjects theatre in education, music education, music theory, musicology or subject areas related to music at a higher education institution, with the opportunity to earn the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.) after submitting a written piece of work at a high level of academic standard, which they must defend successfully.

Start of Studies
Students can start their studies in either winter or summer semester.

Standard Length of Study
There is no standard length of study. However, students are expected to complete their doctorates successfully within two years, which also applies to the attendance of the Doctoral/Methods Colloquium with a scope of eight contact hours per week.

Study Fees
No fees are charged for the doctoral procedure. The semester fee that is charged for every semester at hmt Rostock finances the tasks performed by the Studierendenwerk (Student Services), the student body, as well as the semester ticket for public transport.
