The Freunde und Förderer der Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock e.V. (Society of Friends and Supporters of the Rostock University of Music and Drama) help students to take part in competitions around the world, fund PhD research and artistic projects, organise guest lectures, and provide support and assistance with the purchase of instruments.

We provide support where state funding ends, thereby making so much possible. We also make our wide-ranging contacts available to the University. We select our funding projects carefully in consultation with the University management.

Funding example: Guitar class on concert tour

With the support of the Friends of the hmt Rostock, we guitarists will once again be able to go on a concert tour this year. In May, we will be performing Steve Reich's "Electric Point" for 12 guitars, 2 basses and solo guitar with a large ensemble in Berlin and Bonn. We will also be joined by 3 alumni. This would not have been possible without the generous support of the Förderverein. Last year we were able to perform at the major guitar festival in Mikulov/Czech Republic, where we were able to perform Marek Pasieczny's "Ex Nihilo" for 12 guitars and 2 soloists with great success. We are very grateful to the Förderverein for this!

Prof Dr Thomas Offermann, Head of Studies

‘Music - a lesson for life. The development of a musician is so complex that it has to be propagated and supported from an early age. Without a doubt, only those who receive the best training from the very start will be able to pursue a future career in the music industry.’

Daniel Barenboim, Member of the University Council

‘Music is a multicultural means and a platform for getting to know new people and experiencing new and remarkable moments in life. Music teaches us more than just music. Music can take us to many different places all over the globe. That’s what happened to me last year in Switzerland. I received the opportunity to work together with the world’s best brass players and instructors Their names are Ian Bousfield (former member of the Vienna Philharmonic), Rex Martin (Northwestern University, USA) and Thomas Rüedi (Bern University of the Arts). It was a week in which I hugely profited from the knowledge of these three masters and it was only possible due to the financial support of hmt Rostock’s Society of Supporters and Friends. Without this aid, I probably would have missed out on one of the most influential moments of my life.’

Nuno Henriques, Master of Music Trombone
