Master's Course in Chamber Music - Major Lied Interpretation

Programme details

The core artistic module focuses on song composition for pianists.

Over the course of the programme, students develop a wide-ranging repertoire with different singers from as many vocal groups as possible. Students can also take part in overarching hmt projects and have a variety of opportunities to present themselves on stage with their partners.

The Applied Music Theory and Musicology module is based on the focus of the degree programme. This applies to theoretical areas such as analysis and interpretation as well as practical exercises in listening and intonation training.

Overall, the programme is structured in such a way that all necessary fields of study are taken into account, but more space is given to the time-intensive core module in the 3rd and 4th semesters.

Career perspectives

According to the chosen major, the Master’s course in Chamber Music qualifies for the free-lanced work as a lied pianist or chamber musician. The study programme has been designed for Bachelor’s graduates (or equivalent degree) who stand out through artistic excellence as instrumentalists and have s special potential as lied pianists or chamber musicians.

Language requirements

Foreign students whose native language is not German must provide evidence that their knowledge of German is sufficient for their chosen course. 
For the Master’s degree in Chamber Music, students are required to have reached level B2 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. 
Applicants’ linguistic competence will be established during the aptitude test.

Aptitude test requirements

Please apply via our application website by uploading the required documents and application video by 15th of April for the next winter semester and 15th of November for the next summer semester.
In order to take part in the aptitude test part 1, you need to submit your application as well as one videos according to the regulations of the study course you are applying for.

In order to take part in the aptitude test, you need to submit one application video (playing time: 15 minutes max) comprising the following works:

  • a song by Schubert
  • a song from the late romantic period (Brahms, Wolf, Mahler, Schönberg, Strauss, Pfitzner etc.)
  • a Mélodie française

Please position the camera in such a way that both the singer and the pianist are well visible as well as the pianist's hands from the side.

Each video has to start with a short introduction (your name, your application number, the title of the piece you are about to present). The video has to be filmed in one take and live, which means the material must not be cut or post-edited. There is no need for professional video production. Videos taken with your mobilYou will receive the result of the aptitude test via the application portal.

You will receive the result of the aptitude test via the application portal. If you have passed part 1 of the aptitude test, you will be invited to part 2 which will take place in June for the winter semester and in January for the summer semester. The exact dates will be published under apply for studies.

Requirements for the aptitude test part 2:

  • Solo: at least 2 solo works of different character and style with a high pianistic/artistic standard, one of them a work of Viennese classical music
  • at hmt: 6 lieder of a different style, one of them a lied by Schubert, to be performed with your own singer; via Zoom: one lied of your choice to be performed with your own singer
  • Recitation of one of the lyrics
  • "Play at sight"
  • Talk about your motivation to study lied interpretation

Additionally, foreign students have to pass a German proficiency test.
