The Erasmus+ program enables study stays at partner universities as well as at hmt Rostock. Erasmus+ aims to promote lifelong learning, support sustainable growth, strengthen social cohesion and European identity, and drive innovation.
For the current period 2021–2027, hmt Rostock has received an Erasmus+ Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) and published a Policy Statement on Higher Education. This entitles the university to participate in the Erasmus+ program.
The application process is two-step:
Application for financial support at hmt Rostock:
Required documents are the Erasmus+ application and a motivation letter (max. 1 page).
Selection criteria include the quality and motivation of the application. Preference is given to students studying within the standard period of study.Application for a study place at the host university:
The application for a study place is submitted independently through the procedure of the chosen university. It is recommended to apply to at least three universities to increase the chances of acceptance. A nomination is automatically issued by the International Office.
Grant:
The grant amount varies and is recalculated every year. An up-to-date overview of the funding amounts can be found here. Payments will be made in two instalments once all of the required documents have been signed: the first instalment (70 %) will be transferred prior to departure and the second instalment (30 %) following your return.
Participants with fewer opportunities
For the following "participants with fewer opportunities", the grant is increased to €250 per month: Employed students, First-time university graduates, Students with child/children, Students with a chronic illness, Students with a disability. Applications for real costs to compensate for additional costs incurred abroad can be submitted informally to the International Office.
Green Travel:
Participants who cover more than 50% of their travel using low-emission transport can receive up to 6 additional days and an increased travel allowance.
Double funding:
"Use of funding to cover similar costs already paid from EU funds is not permitted" (3.4 Grant Agreement). Erasmus+ funding is otherwise "compatible with any other source of funding" (3.5 Grant Agreement). Students receiving BAföG should seek advice there.
"zero-grant"
An Erasmus+ stay is also possible without Erasmus+ funding ("zero grant" funding). All other advantages remain the same: Recognition of credit points, intensive supervision, etc.
Leave of absence: An application should be submitted to the Student Secretariat in good time. We recommend a short consultation appointment at the Student Office.
Recognition of Study Achievements and Learning Agreement: The Learning Agreement defines which courses will be taken at the host university and recognized at hmt Rostock. Changes are possible during the semester. It must be completed online and serves as the basis for the Transcript of Records, which is required to recognize the achievements completed abroad.
Every recipient of an Erasmus+ mobility grant is obliged to write a report via the Beneficiary Module and to submit it together with the corresponding proof (e.g. of length of stay).
The application for recognition of study and examination achievements must be submitted within one semester after the completion of the stay abroad.
What are the benefits of a stay abroad? A stay abroad broadens your horizons, improves language skills, and offers new experiences. On the website Studieren weltweit, you can find reports and tips for further inspiration.
I would like to go to a university that is not on the list of partner universities. This is possible. Please contact us so that we can get in touch with the desired university to sign a bilateral agreement.
I am already abroad and would like to extend my stay. In most cases this is possible. The prerequisite is that both universities/colleges have enough free places. Please contact us in advance.
My application for Erasmus+ funding was rejected. We strive to find a solution for everyone. Other options include:
- “zero grant”
- PROMOS
- Stipendiendatenbank vom DAAD
- DAAD Stipendien für Studierende im Fachbereich Musik
- DAAD Stipendien für Studierende im Fachbereich Darstellende Kunst
- DAAD Lehramt.International
- Auslandsbafög
- Deutsch-Amerikanische Fulbright-Stipendium
- Deutsch-Französisches Jugendwerk (DFJW)
- SCHULWÄRTS!
- SWISS MOBILITY PROGRAMME (SEMP)
I would like to go abroad in a non-European country. This is possible, but the budget is very limited. Stays in Switzerland are automatically and exclusively funded through the SEMP programme once a study place in Switzerland has been confirmed.

Erasmus+ students must complete the Learning Agreement online with the chosen courses before the start of the semester. The ‘Component Codes’ are always 1. The number of ECTS can be found in the study plan of the respective department.
I can’t speak any German yet: can I still apply? We would like you to have German language skills equivalent to B1 to help you tackle everyday life. However, you won’t have to prove anything. We strongly recommend you visit a German course as soon as you decide you would like to come to Germany. You can also take a language course during your stay and have the credits recognised at your home institution.

- A maximum of seven days are funded.
- The grant amount varies and is recalculated every year. An up-to-date overview of the funding amounts can be found here.
External international lecturers are always welcome at the hmt, especially if an exchange in the other direction has already taken place. The content and details of the stay are agreed between the lecturers.
At least three weeks before the stay, the name and university of the guest lecturer as well as the agreed period must be communicated to the International Office of the hmt so that an official letter of invitation and a cooperation proposal can be sent to the partner university.
For an incoming mobility, it is possible to apply for up to €100 of "organisational funds". These funds are intended for organisational costs (e.g. printing posters/flyers) and for a pleasant reception (e.g. invitation to a restaurant). Please send an e-mail with the cost estimate to the International Office at least three weeks before your stay. Please use the "Antrag auf Erstattung privat verauslagter Mittel" for billing purposes.
