Singing at a theatre, preparation for your career

Course Profile

The master’s degree course Opera Studio aims to provide practice-oriented training to vocal soloists. This is achieved by the collaboration between hmt Rostock and the theatres in Schwerin, Rostock, Vorpommern and Neustrelitz. Throughout the standard length of study, students take on vocal parts in theatre productions and receive accompanying tuition in their major subject at the university. They are also able to attend courses that help them to prepare for their future profession. A corresponding agreement is signed between the university and the cooperating theatre. The students receive a scholarship during their studies. 

Who is the degree course for?

The degree course is aimed at students with an undergraduate degree in the subject Singing or a related subject, who would like to attend a strongly practice-oriented degree course to prepare themselves for a position as a vocal soloist at a theatre company.

The master’s degree course Opera Studio provides students with opera practice in a professional environment, easing the start to their career.

Language requirements

Foreign students whose native language is not German must provide evidence that their knowledge of German is sufficient for their chosen course. 
For the Master’s degree, students are required to have reached level B2 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. 
Applicants’ linguistic competence will be established during the aptitude test.

Aptitude test requirements for the winter semester 2025/26

Please apply via our application portal by 15th of November for the next winter semester and upload your documents and your application video within the application period.

Part 1 of the entrance examination will be held in a digital format. The online procedure requires you to upload an uncut application video with the following works:

·         3 arias from various eras/languages, including one German aria.

The pieces may be performed with or without accompaniment.

At the beginning of each recording, please announce your name, your applicant number and the title of the piece. The video (to be recorded in landscape format) must be recorded live, in one take, i.e. with no cutting or post-editing. The video must not be produced professionally. Videos recorded with mobile phones are expressly permitted. However, your performance must be clearly visible and audible. Ideally, the camera frame should show the whole person.

You will receive the result of the entrance examination via email.Only applicants who have passed the examination held in the digital round will be invited to part 2 of the entrance examination. The second part of the entrance examination will take place at hmt, approximately at the end of January/beginning of February 2025.

Study applicants for the master’s degree course Opera Studio who have been invited to part 2 of the entrance examination must perform the following from memory:

  • 5 arias from different eras and in different languages among which 1 aria by Mozart and 1 aria has to be sung in German
  • Artistic recitation of a monologue in German
  • The works must be performed in their original language

Foreign study applicants must also take the language test.
