Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Music Education

Major Piano or Guitar

Entrance Requirement

Applicants who wish to enrol at the University of Music and Theatre have to provide proof of entitlement (normally: “Abitur” – general/specialised higher education entrance qualification or foreign equivalent). As an exception for music studies and on request, this document might be complemented or replaced by a certificate verifying the passed entrance examination to the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock. Applicants also need to have completed their compulsory education or will presumably have done so before they start their studies.

Course Profile

  • Official Length of the programme: four years, 240 ECTS-credits
  • Start of the course: winter semester
  • Application period: 1 March to 15 April for the winter semester.
  • University Degree: Bachelor of Music

Programme Details

The degree programme is aimed at people who want to teach piano or guitar at music schools or in a freelance capacity. In addition to the artistic training in the main instrumental subject, which is flanked by courses in music appreciation, pedagogical seminars play a central role. The programme covers the theoretical foundations of instrumental pedagogy, enables students to try their hand at teaching at an early stage and familiarises them with ways of making music with groups. Knowledge and skills for dealing with different target groups are taught in specialised didactics and teaching practice. A pedagogical internship deepens the connection to the professional reality. Students acquire basic knowledge in the field of Elemental Music Education (known as EMP in German). Attending further EMP modules - as part of an additional course of study - enables certification in this area of basic music education, which is in high demand by music schools. An elective area offers the opportunity for individual specialisation, for example in digital music practice or arranging popular music. Finally, students demonstrate their ability to reflect on current issues in instrumental pedagogy as part of a supervised Bachelor's thesis.
It is possible to gain a double qualification by studying for a teaching degree in music at the same time, as the degree programmes have a broad overlap. This also applies to the artistic Bachelor of Music programme.

Language requirements

Foreign students whose native language is not German must provide evidence that their knowledge of German is sufficient for their chosen course.
For the Bachelor’s degree, students are required to have reached level B2 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Applicants’ linguistic competence will be established during the aptitude test.

You will find further information in the FAQs.

Aptitude test requirements

Please apply via our application website by uploading the required documents and application video by 15th of April for the next winter semester.
In order to take part in the aptitude test part 1, you need to submit your application as well as one video.

Please submit one single video recording (one take, uncut, no post-editing) with a playing time of approx. 15 minutes for the guitar and approx. 20 minutes for the piano (see below for more information). It contains the presentation of three works of different styles and characters.

Each video has to start with a short introduction (your name, your application number, the title of the piece you are about to present). There is no need for professional video production, but should be of good sound quality. However, you should be clearly visible and audible whilst playing your instrument or singing. The video should be framed to show the whole person; piano players should be seen from the side.

You will receive an e-mail with the results of part 1 of the aptitude test. If you have passed part 1 of the aptitude test, you will be invited to part 2 which will take place in June. The exact dates will be published under apply for studies. In the second round, the works from the submitted video can be presented.

The main subject examination includes an interview on pedagogical topics. During this interview, you will be asked to explain your motivation for studying, any previous experience in guiding learning processes, and your perspective on your future teaching profession. Additionally, you will be asked to provide spontaneous comments on teaching problems and standard pedagogical situations.
